Monthly Youth Art Kits
Every kit comes with DIY art activities of varying media, along with instructions. Some adult supervision is required. Optional virtual instructor led lessons are on the third Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. Links for virtual lessons are sent in advance. Choose between three different age groups! Kits are available the first Friday of each month.
Age: 4–6, 7–9, 10–13

Monthly Messy Morning Kits
Order a kit for one month of Messy Morning activities! Activities explore cognitive, sensory and creative messy projects with parental guidance. Kits are offered for September, October, November and December. Pick up your kit the first Friday of each month.
Fee: $20 ($18) per kit
Take Home Camp-In-A-Box
We’re providing several themed art activities with everything you need to create at home!Kits are available for pick-up on Thursdays before the week of camp, outside our front entrance. Some camps have a live virtual lesson with Hearst instructors. Links and instructions for virtual sessions will available via email after registration.

Camp Boxes are available for check out at the Cedar Falls Public Library (quantity is limited on a first come first serve basis) – call 319.273.8643 to reserve yours. They are available for pick up at the CFPL and curbside by appointment only. For more information on these boxes click here!

Photography: June 15–19
Using this kit campers can experience the magic of photography! Use a camera obscura to create a tiny camera, experiment with cyanotypes (sun prints), join us online (optional) to design and build a ceramic photo frame. We’re also hosting a photo scavenger hunt. A disposable camera from the pre-digital age will be provided to capture all of your exciting scavenger hunt finds! Camera Obscura prints will need to be dropped off to develop.
The Art of Science: July 13-17
Art is intertwined in all aspects of life, especially science! Observe and research special local finds in your own backyard or around town! Respond to science with art by creating projects based on physics, biology and chemistry with materials in your kit. A local biologist is set to visit virtually with campers on Friday afternoon! A link for the virtual session will be provided via email after registration.
Be Our Guest: Design and Host a Ball for your Family! Aug 3–7
Get fancy at home! Plan a special ball for your family! Design the whole event using prompts and materials from the kit—from costumes, invitations and musical creations – to a special menu for the event. Campers can choose to meet virtually on Friday afternoon with fellow ball-designers and a Hearst host to show off their parties! A link for the virtual session will be provided via email after registration.
Get Messy: We’ll Provide the Mess! Aug 17–21
Some of the most fun art is the MESSIEST! We took our favorite camp and packed it in a kit for you! Materials and directions for slime, papier mache, papermaking, paint balloons- and much more – are included. Dress for a mess!
We are excited to offer a series of virtual small group workshops beginning in late May. If you’re looking for an easy way to (re)spark your creativity and with a small group of other workshoppers, and want to stay in the comfort of your home, these options are a great fit!
After you register, you will receive a link to the class via GoToMeeting. Classes are live and will meet during the time listed. You will also receive a MATERIALS KIT prior to class, either via USPS, drop-off or pick-up. Hearst staff will contact you via email to make arrangements.
Have more than one person in your household that would like to participate and will need a kit? Great! You can order additional kits when you register.

NEW! After School Teen Art Club
Starts in March! (Ages 13–18)
Join us for our new after school art club, where teens work on personal projects with peer feedback and instructor guidance (available but not required). Students decide what to work on in a no-pressure environment twice a month. This club is free and open to all students. The group meets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday monthly from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Some art materials provided and students are welcome to bring their own supplies.
Empty Bowls Workdays
Join us at the Hearst Center or our Annual Empty Bowls Workshop!
Create a bowl for the North East Iowa Food Bank’s Empty Bowls benefit! Come to the Hearst Center anytime during the scheduled walk-in work days to give back and make a bowl to be donated to the North East Iowa Food Bank. Hearst Center instructors and volunteers will be on-site to help participants of all ages create their bowls.
Workdays: February 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m., February 23 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and March 8 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. These workdays are free and open to the public!
MLK Family Workshop
Monday, January 20 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in Rownd I and II Classrom
Join us for our Annual MLK Day of Service by making blankets and toys for shelter animals at the Cedar Bend Humane Society! Sew and tie fabric to create fun, comforting items. A CBHS rep and a furry guest will visit with participants after the workshop! This workshop is free to participate!
Note: If you would like to donate fleece to the Hearst Center for this workshop, please drop off the week before or week of. Thank you!
Teen Art on Display
Our Teen Art Mixed Media Art Class is creating masterpieces every Sunday now through November 10th! Make sure to check out their charcoal pieces in the hallway on the lower level of the Hearst Center!
In this class, teens, ages 12-16, work on canvas with acrylic paint and learn different techniques with chalk pastel and charcoal. In addition to this they also learn about composition in making art and color theory.

Just in time for Halloween! Bring to life your very own spook-inspired beer stein. Learn how to hand build a traditional stein and experiment with
sculptural applique features. Enjoy a beverage of your choice from your stein while celebrating with classmates at the last session. Must be 21+ to
sample beer (additional refreshments provided).
